Romans 13:8-14

SUMMARY: This sacrificial and sanctified life is one in which we love our neighbor because it is the fulfillment of the Law but abstain from the lusts of the flesh.
  I.  We Must Love VERSES 13:8-10
A.  The Exhortation:
1.  The Negative: Owe nothing to anyone (8a)
2.  The Positive: except to love one another; (8b)
B.  The Explanation:
1.  The Reason Stated: for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. (8c)
2.  The Reason Explained:
a.  The Commands:
(1)  First: For this,
“YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY,  (Exodus 20:14)
(9a)
(2)  Second: YOU SHALL NOT MURDER,  (Exodus 20:13) (9b)
(3)  Third: YOU SHALL NOT STEAL,  (Exodus 20:15) (9c)
(4)  Fourth: YOU SHALL NOT COVET,”  (Exodus 20:17) (9d)
b.  The Condensation:
(1)  If: and if there is any other commandment, (9e)
(2)  Then: it is summed up in this saying,
“YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.”  (Leviticus 19:18)

a.  The Reason: Love does no wrong to a neighbor; (10a)
b.  The Statement: therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. (10b)
 
 II.  We Must Not Lust VERSES 13:11-14
A.  The Explanation:
1.  The Statement: Do this, knowing the time, (11a)
2.  The Description: that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; (11b)
3.  The Explanation:
a.  First: for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. (11c)
b.  Second: The night is almost gone, and the day is near. (12a)
B.  The Exhortations:
1.  First:
a.  Negatively: Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness (12b)
b.  Positively: and put on the armor of light. (12c)
2.  Second:
a.  Positively: Let us behave properly as in the day, (13a)
b.  Negatively:
(1)  Alcoholism not in carousing and drunkenness, (13b)
(2)  Immorality: not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, (13c)
(3)  Violence: not in strife and jealousy (13d)
3.  Third:
a.  Positively: But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, (14a)
b.  Negatively: and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts. (14b)
