Romans 12:3-8

SUMMARY: Paul begins to explain how to live a life of sanctified and sacrificial worship by telling his readers that they should honestly evaluate the gifts that God has given them and exercise them accordingly.
  I.  We Must Honestly Evaluate Our Gifts VERSES 12:3-5
A.  The Exhortation:
1.  Introduction:
a.  The Means: For through the grace given to me (3a)
b.  The Action: I say to everyone among you (3b)
2.  Negatively: not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; (3c)
3.  Positively:
a.  First: but to think so as to have sound judgment, (3d)
b.  Second: as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. (3e)
B.  The Explanation – A Comparison:
1.  The Physical Body:
a.  First For just as we have many members in one body (4a)
b.  Second: and all the members do not have the same function, and all the members do not have the same function, (4b)
2.  The body of Christ:
a.  First: so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, (5a)
b.  Second: and individually members one of another. (5b)
 
 II.  We Must Exercise Our Individual Gifts VERSES 12:6-8
A.  The Exhortation:
1.  The Reason: Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, (6a)
2.  The Command: each of us is to exercise them accordingly: (6b)
B.  The Specific Examples:
1.  Prophecy:
a.  If: if prophecy, (6c)
b.  Then: according to the proportion of his faith; (6d)
2.  Service:
a.  If: if service, (7a)
b.  Then: in his serving; (7b)
3.  Teaching:
a.  Who: or he who teaches, (7c)
b.  What: in his teaching; (7d)
4.  Exhortation:
a.  Who: or he who exhorts, (8a)
b.  What: in his exhortation; (8b)
5.  Giving:
a.  Who: he who gives, (8c)
b.  How: with liberality; (8d)
6.  Leadership:
a.  Who: he who leads, (8e)
b.  How: with diligence; (8f)
7.  Mercy:
a.  Who: he who shows mercy, (8g)
b.  How: with cheerfulness. (8h)
