Romans 11:11-32

SUMMARY: Paul anticipates the question or objection that will arise at this point. Someone might say, "Granted, there is a believing remnant but is Israel not finished as a nation?" Paul clearly answers. Certainly not! Israel's failure now has brought salvation to the Gentiles. God can and will reinstate her. Someday all Israel will be saved!
  I.  Introductory Question VERSES 11:11-12
A.  The Question: I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? (11a)
B.  The Answer: May it never be! (11b)
C.  The Explanation:
1.  Salvation for the Gentiles: But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous. (11c)
2.  Fulfillment for Israel Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fulfillment be! (12)

II.  Salvation Has Come to the Gentiles VERSES 11:13-24
A.  Salvation Has Come to the Gentiles:
1.  The Address to the Readers:
a.  The Readers: But I am speaking to you who are Gentiles. (13a)
b.  The Writer’s Ministry: Inasmuch then as I am an apostle of Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, (13b)
c.  The Writer’s Motive: if somehow I might move to jealousy my fellow countrymen and save some of them. (14)
2.  The Principles Stated:
a.  Their Rejection and Acceptance Completes our Salvation:
(1)  If: For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, (15a)
(2)  Then: what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? (15b)
b.  Our Holiness Comes through Israel:
(1)  The Idea Stated:
(a)  If: If the first piece of dough is holy, (16a)
(b)  Then: the lump is also; (16b)
(2)  The Idea Restated:
(a)  If: and if the root is holy, (16c)
(b)  Then: the branches are too. (16d)
B.  The Warnings to the Gentiles:
1.  The First Warning:
a.  If:
(1)  First: But if some of the branches were broken off, (17a)
(2)  Second: and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them (17b)
(3)  Third: and became partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree, (17c)
b.  Then: do not be arrogant toward the branches; (18a)
2.  The Second Warning:
a.  If: but if you are arrogant, (18b)
b.  Then: remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you. (18c)
3.  The Objection Made:
a.  The Objection: You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” (19)
b.  The Reply:
(1)  The First Point: Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, (20a)
(2)  The Second Point: but you stand by your faith. (20b)
(3)  The Warning: Do not be conceited, but fear; (20c)
(a)  If: for if God did not spare the natural branches, (21a)
(b)  Then: He will not spare you, either. (21b)
C.  The Conclusion: Behold then the kindness and severity of God; (22a)
1.  The Statement:
a.  His Severity (Israel): to those who fell, severity, (22b)
b.  His Kindness (Gentiles): but to you, God’s kindness, (22c)
2.  The Conditions:
a.  For the Gentiles:
(1)  If: if you continue in His kindness; (22d)
(2)  Else: otherwise you also will be cut off. (22e)
b.  For Israel:
(1)  If: And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, (23a)
(2)  Then: will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. (23b)
(3)  Explanation:
(a)  If: For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, (24a)
(b)  Then: how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree? (24b)

III.  All Israel Will Someday Be Saved VERSES 11:25-32

3.  The Mystery:
a.  The Hardening:
(1)  What: that a partial hardening has happened to Israel (25c)
(2)  How Long: until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; (25d)
b.  The Salvation: and so all Israel will be saved; (26a)
c.  The Scriptures: just as it is written,
“THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION,
HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB.”
“THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM,
WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS.”  (Isaiah 59:20-21)
(26b-27)
B.  The Present State of Israel:
1.  First:
a.  The Viewpoint: From the standpoint of the gospel (28a)
b.  Their Status: they are enemies for your sake, (28b)
2.  Second:
a.  The Viewpoint: but from the standpoint of God’s choice (28c)
b.  Their Status:
(1)  The Statement: they are beloved for the sake of the fathers; (28d)
(2)  The Reason: for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. (29)
C.  The Comparison:
1.  Gentiles:
a.  The Condition in the Past: For just as you once were disobedient to God, (30a)
b.  The Condition Now:
(1)  The Change: but now have been shown mercy (30b)
(2)  The Reason: because of their disobedience, (30c)
2.  Israel:
a.  The Condition Now: so these also now have been disobedient, (31a)
b.  The Condition to Come:
(1)  The Reason: that because of the mercy shown to you (31b)
(2)  The Change they also may now be shown mercy. (31c)
3.  The Conclusion:
a.  The Judgment: For God has shut up all in disobedience (32a)
b.  The Reason: so that He may show mercy to all. (32b)
