Romans 2:1-11

SUMMARY: In explaining God’s just punishment of unrighteousness, Paul declares that we condemn ourselves when we do the same things that we condemn in others, because God judges impartially based only upon a person’s actions.
  I.  Our Self Condemnation VERSES 2:1-5
A.  The Declaration:
1.  The Guilt: Therefore you have no excuse, every one of you who passes judgment, (1a)
2.  The Proof: for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. (1b)
B.  The Discussion:
1.  The Principle: And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things. (2)
2.  The Mistakes:
a.  The First: But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God? (3)
b.  The Second: Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? (4)
3.  The Conclusion:
a.  The Cause: Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? (5a)
b.  The Result: you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, (5b)

 II.  God’s Judgment VERSES 2:6-11
A.  The Principle Stated who WILL RENDER TO EACH PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS: (Psalm 62:1) (6)
B.  The Principle Developed:
1.  It is based upon one’s deeds:
a.  The Positive Case:
(1)  The Deeds: to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, (7a)
(2)  The Judgment: eternal life; (7b)
b.  The Negative Case:
(1)  The Deeds: but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, (8a)
(2)  The Judgment: wrath and indignation. (8b)
2.  It is Impartial:
a.  The Negative Case:
(1)  The Judgment: There will be tribulation and distress (9a)
(2)  The Deeds: or every soul of man who does evil, (9b)
(3)  The Persons: of the Jew first and also of the Greek, (9c)
b.  The Positive Case:
(1)  The Judgment: but glory and honor and peace (10a)
(2)  The Deeds: to everyone who does good, (10b)
(3)  The Persons: to the Jew first and also to the Greek. (10c)
C.  The Reason Given: For there is no partiality with God. (11)
